Blood is an important fluid in the human body. About 20% of body fluids are blood. Approximately, 6–7% of the total body weight is blood. It has 4 main components such as plasma, Red blood cells (erythrocytes), White blood cells (Leukocytes), Blood platelets. Blood acts as a carrier in the transportation of oxygen from the heart to different parts of the body and vice-versa.

Colors of blood in human beings:

Yes, human beings are reported to have different colors in blood in various conditions. Though the blood of humans is of red color, it is seen to have various other conditions like :

Red

Dark red — almost appears brown to maroon color

Blue color

Green color.

Blood appears red in color due to the presence of hemoglobin. The same blood turns into various other colors when the hemoglobin is complexed with other chemical substances such as sulfates and the absence of oxygen.

The appearance of the blood in green color is due to the complexes of sulfates and hemoglobin. Such a condition is termed Sulfhaemoglobinemia. It is caused by medicines containing sulfur it is usually an overdose. Mainly, it is caused by sulfa drugs such as sulphasalazine. Overexposure to sulfur also causes the blood hemoglobin to turn into sulphaemoglobin. It can also be caused by phenazopyridine. This discoloration is Known as Cyanosis. The symptoms include: blueish to the greenish coloration of the skin, blood, and mucous membranes.

When the blood is de-oxygenated i.e. when the hemoglobin is not carrying enough oxygen to the body, it turns into blue color and the body appears pale in color. The hemoglobin is said to be de-oxyhemoglobin. The reaction of iron with oxygen results in the appearance of red color to the blood. When the amount of oxygen is decreased, the combination of iron with oxygen is decreased, resulting in the pale color of the blood.

When adequate amounts of oxygen are present in the blood, it appears to be dark red in color, often visible in brown color. When hemoglobin is in little amounts, the blood appears in a pale color.
